Dr. Graettinger and Brittany Shake traveled to Los Angeles, California to participate in the ADC-60 TRB Committee Summer Workshop. The conference was held at the LA Metro Headquarters in Downtown LA and this year's theme was Sustainability in a Time of Resource Scarcity. Dr. Graettinger presented the Recycled Materials Web Map project, which was met with a great response. In addition to attending business meetings and other presentations, Dr. G and Brittany found time to explore and do some sightseeing. They visited the La Brea Tar Pits, the Griffith Observatory, and hiked the Runyun Canyon Trail.
"I really enjoyed the summer workshop as a whole, but one of my favorite presentations was about how a DOT handled a very sensitive environmental hazard that they encountered during the construction of a ramp. Shortly after construction began, the contractor found buried munitions that dated back to an old metal recycling business outside a military facility. The DOT leveraged geophysics, expert consultants, and specialized equipment to find and remove the spent ordnance. It was a very interesting presentation and everyone was on the edge of their seats!"
